Episode 8: Container Arch – Pilbara

Master of Architecture students at the University of Melbourne have for the past few years been engaging in a unique exercise using recycled shipping containers; the building of local facilities for remote communities in the outback Pilbara region.

Designing and pre-fabricating the structures in Melbourne at the faculty workshop, groups of around a dozen students and faculty staff then travel to the Pilbara in Western Australia and, in concert with local community members, erect and fit-out the child-care, educational and health facilities over a ten day period.

Citing benefits that include not only cost, speed and low-carbon usage by reducing transport of materials, the additional cultural exchange and bonding between students and local indigenous communities are also held in high regard.

Dr. David O’Brien, Snr Lecturer, Faculty of Architecture Building and Planning at Melbourne University, describes the process and it’s benefits in this inspiring story.
