    Episode 123: Glenn Murcutt’s Mosque

    The Australian Islamic Centre is an initiative by the Newport Islamic Society (NIS). The new Centre (Australian Islamic Centre) will have considerable benefits to the entire community in Hobsons Bay and specific benefits to the local Muslim Community. It will also have benefits with reaching effects to many residents of Melbourne. The centre is designed by Glenn Murcutt, one of the world’s most renowned architects, in collaboration with Hakan Elevli of Elevli+ Architects.

    This week on Architel Jan Henderson talks with Japanese architect Shigeru Ban. Shigeru is known for his innovative work with paper, particularly recycled cardboard tubes used to quickly and efficiently house disaster victims. He was profiled by Time magazine in their projection of 21st century innovators in the field of architecture and design.

    Episode 108: Newport Mosque-Glenn Murcutt

    In this week’s episode, Jan talks with renowned architect, Glenn Murcutt at his exhibition on The Australian Islamic Centre, which is being held at the Nation Gallery of Victoria. The building sets out to pave the way for a new architectural language in contemporary Australian Islam, challenging our preconceptions of historical architectural typologies and aesthetics. The Australian Islamic Centre still respects the fundamental principles and requirements of Islamic architecture, but Murcutt has gone beyond the semiotic language of a traditional mosque through carrying out a progressive vision for architecture as a tool for intercultural development and dialogue.

    The Maison et Objet exhibition in Paris last year showcased the latest interior products and furnishing from leading designers from around the world.

    ArchiTel’s very own interiors editor, Jan Henderson, was at the event and picked out what she believed to be the best stands. These included Arcade Architecture and Interior, Dirk Cousaert and Normann Copenhagen.

    Episode 93: Gijs Bakker

    Gijs Bakker was trained as a jewelry and industrial designer at the Gerrit Rietveld Academie in Amsterdam, the Netherlands and the Konstfackskolan in Stockholm, Sweden. His designs cover jewelry, home accessories and household appliances, furniture, interiors, public spaces and exhibitions.

    In 1993, Bakker co-founded Droog Design, a Dutch collective of designers, products and information. Together with Renny Ramakers, he was the selector and art director of all products within Droog Design until 2009.

    Gijs Bakker recently gave a talk at the National Gallery of Victoria. During his trip to Melbourne, Architel’s Jan Henderson had the opportunity to interview him and get his unique insight into design.

    Milan Design Week: Brodie Neill

    In the fifth program, Jan visits talks to leading Australian-born and London-based designer Brodie Neill.

    Brodie Neill studied at the University of Tasmania (2002) before completing postgraduate studies at the Rhode Island School of Design (USA) in 2004. Brodie has quickly established himself within the international industry through a progressive use of form, resulting in design contributions included in such titles as Taschen’s Design Now (2007) and Time Magazine’s annual Design 100 (2008) featuring the most influential designs of today.

    Among his notable designs are the E-turn for the Italian brand Kundalini, Jet table for Swarovski, the limited edition Remix for The Apartment Gallery London, and the @ Chair included in Time Magazine’s Design 100.

    Milan Design Week: Oki Sato of Nendo

    In this report from the Milan Design Week in Italy, Jan Henderson talks to leading international designer Oki Sato of Nendo.

    Sato was born in Toronto, Canada and graduated in 2002 with an M.A. in Architecture, from the prestigious Waseda University, Tokyo. In the same year he established “nendo” Tokyo office and in 2005 Sato established “nendo” Milan office, as a result of his previous visit there for Design Week. In 2006 he was named in the “100 Most Respected Japanese” in Newsweek magazine and in 2007 again in the “Top 100 Small Japanese Companies” by Newsweek. After a number of design and publishing ventures, Sato established “nendo” Singapore office in 2012, the same year he became a lecturer for Waseda University, Tokyo and was named “Designer of the Year” by Wallpaper* magazine and “Designer of the Year” by Elle Deco International Design Award.

ArchiTel covered DesignEx 2013 as the official videographer, and covered not only the best of the show exhibits, but also interviewed special guest presenter Patrick Frey of Pierre Frey Textiles, covered the Northern Lights competition and profiled the NEST specially curated feature.

    This second story is a wrap-up of the Northern Lights competition at this year’s show, featuring five young designers who have created new lighting concept designs. With the prize a contract to have the winning design manufactured by Danish furniture company &Tradition, the finalists presented their concepts and their prototypes to a panel of luminaries. The prototypes were created using 3D manufacturing technology courtesy of Tasman 3D.
